There’s been a lot of discussion about a national wifi network offered by Google for some time now ever since Om Malik suggested it on his blog, and I believe we are one step closer following the release of the google secure access product yesterday. Google secure access is “downloadable client application that allows users to establish a more secure WiFi connection.” This of course is seen as a product that will ultimately be used with their free, unsecured googlenet wifi. By offering this product they can cover a large area with free wifi access without compromising security (I’m not going to even touch the whole issue of google knowing everything about your web browsing habits). I have been able to successful logon to vpn.google.com from both my home network, and the free wifi offered by my local coffee shop. Check out my pics here: A googlenet would allow google to offer their relevant ads on a whole other level of relevance, proximity. If you logon to googlenet say near an office depot, google will not only know this, but they will be able to offer ads about specials the nearest home depot is offering. They’ve made billions offering advertisements served up based on keyword relevance, and now they’re positioning themselves to make billions on relevance by location AND keywords. smart company.
